“Big Bertha” COE build project

Posted in custom, fabrication, Home built, hot rod, Truck, vintage/nostalgia on September 29, 2007 by Craig Pike

My man Mr. Freeze out of Gilbert, AZ is a friend to MyRideisMe.com. He’s just purchased this Chevy Cab over engine (COE) that’s got a 455 Olds Toronado FRONT WHEEL DRIVE powertrain under it. This is going to be good!

Check out Mr. Freeze’s garage for a look at the work he does. He’s not a full time builder but he spends alot of time out in the garage. Can’t wait to see it come together!

A Great Start – Concept Drawings

A-100 Dayton drag race conceptIf you’re like me, before you even purchase a car, you’ve made the plan in your head. After buying the car, the next step is usually trying to find the parts you need to start building your dream, but that’s not how big time builders do it… their next step is always a concept illustration ala Chip Foose on Overhauln’. When your dream takes shape on paper, you’re miles ahead to getting what you want… You’ve got a real plan. That’s where Brian at Problem Child Kustoms comes in. How sweet is this illustration!

Brian’s a hot rod and custom car designer that actually builds HIS dreams when time allows. He grew up on the standard Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines and got the drawing bug from MAD Magazine (Mort Drucker’s his hero) and from CARtoons magazines. Now, after hard work refining his skills, Brian’s been published in the mags he grew up reading like: Hot Rod Magazine, Street Trucks and Custom Rodder, not to mention a bunch of graphic design, website design, t-shirts and logo work. He’s proud to be showing his backside to the doubters he met along the way that said he won’t go anywhere drawing cars!

Here’s an illustration of the sick Project Panther. It’s a hybrid Camaro and Nova spliced together made just for Brian. Look for this one soon…

Blend of a Camaro and Nova for the Panther Concept car

So take a look at Brian’s website and the work Problem Child Kustoms has done. You’d be surprised to find that his illustrations are very reasonable and after you’re done, you can hang it on your wall! He’ll do a one view sketch all the way to routing your brake lines, all from the illustration.

Brian’s a member at MyRideisMe.com and has used his garage to showcase the work he’s done. Here’s a link to his garage. If you’re also an artist, please feel free to post your work and use the garage as an online portfolio with links to your page. Thanks to Brian for being a great friend to MyRideisMe.com! I’m trying to slip into his schedule to do a concept for my 61 Rambler American Wagon. Watch for that one too!

Please join MyRideisMe.com and get your own Custom Garage Space (that one’s mine!) to put pictures of your car, project or whatever you’re driving!

Pushing the Envelope – Big Rig Hot Rod

Posted in hot rod, rat rod, Truck, Vintage with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on September 20, 2007 by Craig Pike

img_4689.jpgImagine yourself at a traditional hot rod show like Billetproof, enjoying Antioch California’s cool morning breeze when you smell diesel fumes. Billetproof isn’t the kind of show where you can trailer your baby in, so something’s not right. Then you hear the whine of a giant turbo just as this beast rounds the corner. Behold the 1950 Peterbilt owned by Michael Leeds. The name for this Hot Rod Semi is up in the air, but “Sneaky Pete” is the front runner. Michael comfortably cruised about 100 miles from Santa Cruz, CA thanks to the inline 6 Cummins turbo-diesel hooked to a 12 speed automatic transmission spinning highway friendly 2.92 gears. Michael guesses 12 to 20 mpg but driving range is no problem since he’s hauling 105 gallons in the polished aluminum fuel tank out back. This baby’s read to travel, even weighing in at about 7000 lbs.
Here’s the link to all the pictures I took of this truck.

Ever see a Black Shadow?

Vincent Motorcycle Ad

The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum raffled off a 1953 Vincent Black Shadow to benefit the museum. The lucky man from Tempe, AZ bought 5 tickets for $25 and walked away with a legendary bike. It’s good to know that it went to a guy who really knew what he was getting. He is a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor, has attended almost every AMA & MotoGP race at Laguna Seca in the past 10 years and even took a trip to the Isle of Man.

Next year they will be raffling off another 1953 Black Shadow. Go buy some tickets!

Bonneville Vintage GP

Bonneville Vintage GP

Last weekend saw the second annual Bonneville Vintage GP at Miller Motorsports Park hosted by the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. This event was run concurrently with the BUB Speed Trials at the salt flats and Master of the Mountain on the west track at Miller.

The races included the Battle of the CB160s complete with an old-school standing start and side-car races. I’m sure next year will be even bigger and better. Keep an eye on www.bonnevillevintagegp.com for the 2008 schedule.

Results are located here at:

Pushing the Hot Rod Envelope

Hot rod semi Sneaky Pete

Michael’s no stranger to giant scale projects. Ever heard of Blastolene? Michael designed Blastolene which was later purchased by legendary car collector Jay Leno. Blastolene’s got an M47 Patton Tank engine that’s 1800 cu.in. of aluminum, air cooled, overhead cammed badness making 1200 horsepower with 1500 ft.lbs of torque.

For Sneaky Pete, Michael’s concept was handed to Randy Grubb (remember the semi-truck chopper from Monster Garage?) who took over the build chores and had it on the road in 1 ½ years. The Peterbilt’s aluminum cab was chopped a shocking 11 inches to give it that nasty Bonneville Salt Flat competition coupe look. Up front, a custom made Posie’s Super SlideTM spring mounts a smoothed front axle from an International garbage truck! All that’s held in place using hairpins that were formed from 1/4” DOM tubing. Yea, QUARTER INCH!

What’s next? Michael told me he’s filming a pilot TV show calledGreen Machines. He’s trying to bring radical rides like Blastolene and Sneaky Pete into the mainstream. I hope he makes it because from the moment Michael pulled in, he was surrounded by awestruck spectators trying to figure out, “What the hell is that?” Thanks for pushing the Hot Rod envelope and answering, even if just for today, the age old question of, “What will they think of next?”
